Afterschool Volunteer Tutor (in-person)
Overview
The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Education Team is seeking in-person volunteer tutors for our Afterschool Tutoring Program for the 2024-2025 school year, Fall semester (September-December). Volunteer tutors will be great role models for our students by supporting them in completing their homework and strengthening their academic skills.

Position Description
Volunteer Tutors will support CIANA's Afterschool Program by offering one-on-one or small group homework help to elementary school students in Grades 1-5 and/or middle school students in Grades 6-8. Homework help sessions are conducted in-person on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm-5:30pm at an off-site location (see address below) near the CIANA office in Astoria, Queens. Volunteer tutors may also be used as substitutes for other volunteers at times.

Qualifications

Passionate, committed, engaging!

Experience in working with children is preferred, but not required

Background in mathematics and/or English is preferred

Volunteers must be available on Wednesdays between 4-5:30pm through June 2024

Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age at the time of application

Beginner ESL Instructor (in-person)
Overview
CIANA is looking for a volunteer instructor to teach our beginner English as a Second Language (ESL) class for adults in the morning. Our classes are typically attended by 10-15 students whose English proficiency ranges from none to basic. You must be comfortable managing a diverse group of students and facilitating fun and interactive activities. Materials can be provided, you are also welcome to use your own.
Responsibilities

Write and deliver English lessons that incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and listening components based on a curriculum

Facilitate lessons and practical English in a fun and accessible way

Collaborate with other ESL teachers on lesson development and execution

Assist in tracking student needs and progress

Case Management Volunteer (Arabic and/or French speaking)
Overview
The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) Case Management team provides job assistance, housing assistance, and public benefits application support, as well as referrals to other community and public resources. Our Case Management team is looking for highly personable, persistent, and detail-oriented Case Management Volunteers proficient in Arabic and/or French to assist our Case Managers with clients who speak these languages.

(CIANA) is a social services organization that works to integrate new immigrants from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and Latin America into the socioeconomic and civic life of American society while maintaining pride in their cultural heritage.

Key Responsibilities

Schedule and confirm new appointments with clients

Facilitate correspondence between CIANA, clients, and outside agencies

Complete general intake forms for new clients

Assist with case working appointments and aid in interpretation for French and/or Arabic speaking clients

Maintain and organize case management spreadsheets, database, and digital files
-
Organize and maintaining up-to-date digital files
-
Attend virtual trainings and coalition meetings with Case Manager and/or client

Qualifications

This volunteer position is for undergraduate students (with at least two years completed) or graduate students

Proficiency in French and/or Arabic

Experience in one or more of the following:

Phone-banking

Research

Organization and filing
